In Thursday's class, we learnt about the concept of 'hedging', a process in which writers use cautious language in order to avoid making strong statements. Since no academic research can be absolute, we must be careful while making strong claims. Words such as clearly, obviously, undoubtedly and definitely are to be avoided, and replaced with phrases such as suggests, appears to, can and generally.
